That New England Vibe

Apizza.  No, not a typo.  Apizza.  Turns out New Haven, CT runs with the big boys in New York and Chicago when it comes to pizza.  New Haven even has their own name for it.  Apizza, pronounced “ah-beetz”, which is a shout-out to the Neapolitan immigrants who first brought pizza to the region.   It’s got the kind of crust I love – crunchy but magically chewy, a little charred.  Not a lot of cheese, not a lot of sauce.  We met a friend in New Haven (a great IBM’er, who I credit for making my last couple years there fun) and he and his wife introduced us to this delicacy.  If you see Apizza, don’t assume a typo – find the restaurant with the line outside and place your order.

Our stop in Connecticut allowed me to see a second great IBM’er.   Technically, I prefer to think of him as a great C&L’er – before we were PwC’ers, before we were IBM’ers.  The person I credit for launching my career.

Connecticut also provided us a second visit with one of Pete’s sisters.   Tourist days are more fun with family.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again ….. Spending time with family and friends is the best part of this vagabond life.

We noticed the coastline changed as we got to Connecticut.  No more cliffs rising from the ocean.  Beaches and quaint port towns instead.   It looked more like the East Coast I’m used to – except the quaint port towns are much more adorable – must be that New England vibe.    It’s the end of the summer season here – Labor day is this weekend – and everyone is out, enjoying the coast, on their final summer flings.

A few leaves are changing.  There is a chill at night.

We can take New England off the bucket list. Connecticut concludes our New England adventure. We hit the road today – it’s time for us to start heading south for the winter.  Slowly.  Very slowly.  But still South!  First stop, the Jersey Shore, for our final summer fling!  If you are reading this on Wednesday, August 30, please say a quick traveling prayer for us, as our route to the shore takes us around NYC and Newark.  We’re giving both those places a wide berth.  Pete’s an awesome driver.   I know he’ll get us there safely, but extra prayers never hurt.

Bye New England.  We came.  We saw.  We ate.  We loved it.

Be very careful going towards the storm, please. Maybe stay up north a little longer? Florida storms need time to calm down.
New England looks idyllic. Is that a second fancy library at Yale? It looks like the other one but I thought that was someplace else? Now you are just confusing me. And, is that the original Mystic Pizza place?

    • We won’t be in FL until late October, so plenty of time for this hurricane to pass. The “fancy” building is the state capital. It was like a castle outside. Really beautiful inside too. And, yes, that is the original Mystic Pizza! 🙂

  2. Please God;
Command an army of millions of angels to surround Mary and Pete with a hedge of protection. Keep them safe from accidents, injuries, mechanical problems, and Illness. Keep them safe from all harm, alarm, all evil and disaster. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

    • Thank you, so very much, Susan. We arrived safely. Not too much traffic. Just a little rain.

We really appreciate all your prayers.

  3. Beautiful……interesting about Abreeza and I’ll share a story about CT italian, nd s Paul Jar wh says, now I know the rest of the story.

About 30ish years ago, August LeConte, moved to Charlotte and opened a small amazing Italian restaurant….. was it amaziing food. Since then, August and his fabulous restaurants have become a staple in Charlotte annd the restaurants scene and he has probably opened 10ish restaurants all over the city. Currently he has 4 and in a town where restaurants come and go frequently, he has found success, always great food and consistent great service.

About 10ish heard ago I learned the back story……several bankers travelled to New Haven frequently, they loved Ausgusto’s food and after many trips there convinced him to move to Charlotte and open an Italian restaurant. Chrlotte ws very lacking in the Italian food category……. Nans my guess is they helped fund the restaurant….now I know why he was in CT…..which is where he landed when he moved to America.

Now for the questions…what’s the big red Budweiser thing and as always, loved your description of the cities….felt like I was there with you in CT……

    Prayers for your travels today…..and

Where does your path take you as you head back south, perhaps we can connect!

    • Hi Elizabeth.  Glad I could help connect New Haven to Charlotte for you!  🙂   Our path south takes us through VA, NC, SC, and GA.  But we are hugging the coast.  Williamsburg VA, then near New Bern & Wilmington NC, Jekyll Island, GA.  So, unless you are planning a beach trip, I don’t think we’ll be near you.  I’m still hoping you get a trip to FL over the winter and maybe we can connect.  That big Budwiser thing is a speed boat.  The kind that races and barely touches the water.  It looked pretty scary up close, can’t imagine going fast in it.  Thanks for the prayers as we circled NYC, we arrived safe.  We added an extra 60  miles by circling around the city, but we think it was worth it!

  4. Wonderful pictures of New England. Our prayers are with you Mary and Pete for safe journey south today.
    Godspeed Nation travelers!

    • We arrived safely. Thanks for the prayers. So many people, so many crazy drivers. We took our time and had no issues today.

  5. This makes me a bit homesick for summers in New England. I’ve always dreamed of having a family vacation home around Plymouth, one of the few places with a dog beach!

Looks like you had a great summer by the beach!

  6. Pez reminds me of the kazoo factory!

    • I agree! When I saw it was close by, I told Pete that since we toured the kazoo factory, it was only fair that we tour PEZ. Kazoo tour was much better! 😀
